Young people in Salinas with diabetes won’t have to travel long distances for treatment now that a pediatric diabetes clinic opened in Salinas Friday, health officials said.
Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System has officially opened its Pediatric Diabetes Clinic, which operates in conjunction with UCSF Medical Center. The clinic is located at 355 Abbot Street in Salinas.
The clinic will treat young people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The partnership with UCSF was created to help families and children diagnosed with diabetes avoid long drives to see doctors.
Formerly, families and children in Monterey County had to commute to San Jose, Palo Alto or San Francisco to get specialized diabetic care or to see endocrinologists.
“We are grateful for this partnership with UCSF,” Allen Radner, chief medical officer at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, said in a statement.
The medical officer said it’s important for children to have access to care that will help them manage their diabetes at an early age.
